GREEN PLACES IN HAWAIIKAUAIThe green taro fields of peaceful Hanalei stretch across Kauai’s northern coast. Seeing these emerald fields is like seeing Hawaii back in time. The lush mountains of the iconic Napali Coast tower over northern Kauai’s coastline. Hikers can take the challenging Kalalau trail to experience Napali’s stunning views. OAHUVisit the Nuuanu Pali Lookout for stunning views of the Koolau mountains and the windward side of Oahu. Read the historical markers to learn about the fierce battle that took place here during Kamehameha’s quest to unite the Islands. Just a short drive from Honolulu (expect traffic during rush hours), take the Pali Highway north (61) and look for the Pali Lookout exit on the right. The lookout is just a short walk from the parking lot. MOLOKAIOn Molokai’s secluded northern coast is Kalaupapa peninsula. Take a mule ride along some of the highest sea cliffs in the world to Kalaupapa National Historic Park. It was here that the Father Damien treated Hansen’s disease patients in the late 1800’s. The views overlooking this isolated peninsula are amazing. LANAIFour-wheel drive up the Munro Trail past rainforests and majestic pine trees to the top of Mount Lanaihale, Lanai’s highest point. Along the way you’ll be treated to wonderful views of Maunalei gulch and neighboring Maui. HAWAII’S BIG ISLANDLocated on the northern Hamakua Coast, sacred Waipio Valley was once the childhood home of King Kamehameha. Known as “The Valley of the Kings,” Waipio is filled with taro fields, waterfalls, and lush vegetation. You can take a guided tour into this fertile valley or view it from the Waipio Valley Overlook.
