Makalei Golf Club
Hawaii's Big Island
Makalei Golf Club is a mountain course located on the lower slopes of Hualalai, just 10 minutes directly up the hill from Kona's Keahole International Airport. This is a one-of-a-kind track due in large part to its 900-foot elevation change, its links-suggestive routing, and views of the Kona-Kohala Coast and Maui's Haleakala over 80 miles away.
Amidst a silver oak and ohia forest that blossoms yellow and red during the spring, Makalei is fast regaining its reputation as one of the Islands' most beautiful and challenging courses. Much of this is thanks to an aggressive reconditioning program that, amongst other things, has restored its famous stone-terraced tee boxes. However, it's Makalei's superb Bentgrass greens, found at only four extreme-elevation Hawaii golf courses, that makes this club unique.
The Dick Nugent designed layout requires concentration and getting a feel for the terrain is essential. First-timers are wise to play from the middle or forward tees after warming up at Makalei's expansive all-grass driving range. This Big Island golf course also serves as a flyaway for a wide variety of birds, including the peacock, so don't forget to pack your camera in your golf bag.
