Description

Volcano Golf and Country Club is Hawaii's highest course, situated at over 4,200 feet and a mere one mile from both Kilauea Volcano and Halemaumau Crater or 'just a 3-iron away,' as the locals say. This is also the island's oldest course, dating back to 1922, when it had just one hole.

Volcano Golf and Country Club is remote, about a 50-minute drive from Hilo and 95 minutes from Kailua-Kona. The drive is well worth the effort since the course is attractive and nicely maintained to match its surroundings in Volcano Village. The key to a successful round at Volcano, apart from enjoying a meal at the restaurant, is keeping the ball in play on this tight layout. This is especially difficult with the thin, crisp air adding 10 to 25 yards to every swing.

Be prepared for mountainous weather, as it can change in an instant. Clear days deliver wonderful views. The bending uphill 17th hole is one of Hawaii's best par-5s. Spend at least a night in the area and enjoy both Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and this unique golf experience.
