Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings' Course
Hawaii's Big Island
Description
When the Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish-designed Kings’ Course opened for play in 1990, Waikoloa re-established itself as a major golf resort by offering two distinctly different, yet eminently enjoyable, 18-hole layouts. While the Beach Course is certainly fun to play, the Kings’ Course presents certain challenges. Kings’ is built to play with the prevailing trade winds in mind. Catch this course on a day when opposite (Kona) winds are blowing, and you’ll be treated to 10 holes that play shorter than indicated, while the remaining eight will play very long indeed. The exquisite short par-4 at the 5th Hole turns back toward the clubhouse and measures less than 300 yards from the middle tees. In Kona winds, the green can be driven. Alas, that means the front nine’s closing holes will also play much longer. Large, deep fairway bunkers come into play on some holes, and there is a huge shared green for the 3rd and 16th Holes. Another creative short par-4 rears its lovely head at No. 13. Play well away from the pond on the left. Even though the Kings’ course is set well inland from the Beach Course, it manages to include water hazards on six holes. And don’t be surprised if you encounter a small herd of goats prancing across the course. After all, this is the Big Island, where country is king.
