Waimea Country Club
Hawaii's Big Island
Description
Waimea Country Club delivers yet another refreshingly satisfying Big Island, Upcountry Golf Trail experience. Amid eucalyptus, ironwood, and pine trees, the setting is in sharp contrast to the sun-drenched resort courses down along the Kohala Coast.
While not imposing in terms of slope, rating, or total distance, the links-style front nine opens with four holes that will measure anyone’s game. Playing into the prevailing trade winds, the par-4 at No. 1 legs left and plays longer than it looks. The second hole, a par-3 delivers a terraced green, another Waimea feature. No. 3, at less than 400 yards, is a tight-driving hole. By the time golfers reach the par-4 No. 4 that doglegs right and leaves left-to-right crosswind approach, they may have hit every club in their bag.
The back nine is more of a shotmaker’s delight with impressive trees bordering fairways and greens and some clever use of water. A morning tee time vastly improves your chances of avoiding the heavenly reason for Waimea’s lush appearance. Hawaii golfers suggest bringing a light jacket and towel as the weather can change on a dime.
