SIG ZANE'S FAVORITE PLACES IN HILO
HILO, HAWAII'S BIG ISLAND Celebrated fashion designer Sig Zane loves Hilo. He hand cuts all of his plant designs in his studio above his flagship store, amongst the shops on Hilo Bay. Here’s what Sig has to say about some of his favorite spots in downtown Hilo: Hana Hou
808-935-4555 “This store is my stop for kukaa (rolls of dried lauhala ready to strip and weave), hau (inner bark strips for cordage), and kapa (bark cloth). These items are used in ceremony, plaiting, and in hula. There is also a great collection of papale lauhala (hats) that celebrate both the contemporary and traditional styles of weaving. One might also find umeke (calabash) of kou (native tree more rare than koa) and plant stands of koa. There is also a wonderful selection of etched glassware with our favorite tropical plant designs!” Wilson's By The Bay808-969-9191 “Super “iced shaved” (Here in Hilo it is not called “shaved ice”)! Leysan concocts her own flavors (except for the popular strawberry) and builds huge cone mountains of ice! The texture of her treat makes it special. Try the lychee and lilikoi with condensed milk.” Hawaiian Arts808-935-1860 “Popular Hilo culture is found here! Current island slang is hand-screened on tees, tanks, and bags in this cornerstone of Downtown Hilo. As one of the long-time business of the area, the guys here have the best selection of original art with a definite sense of place. What you see is now. You may not see it again, so grab it while you can!” Ebesugawa Sisters808-934-7126 “Hilo is known for their fresh flowers and these gals are THE institution for the best! They have seen it all and still continue to deliver the most incredible bouquets of anthuriums, orchids, and my favorite — irsises! Stop at their storefront and the colors of the flowers greet you. Talk story with these gals because they are the sweetest!” The Cutlery808-443-4094 “Formerly Kaya’s Cutlery, this young owner kept the last part of the name to honor the proprietor. In place of knives, scissors, and swords, he now carries the latest in street wear! Pulling from sources in California and Oahu, Kuhao adds some of his own personalized designs to the shelves. Hats and shoes are the most current offerings, supplying some options that are only available in Hilo!" > Learn more about Hilo |
