Celebrated fashion designer Sig Zane loves Hilo. He hand cuts all of his plant designs in his studio above his flagship store, amongst the shops on Hilo Bay. Here’s what Sig has to say about some of his favorite spots in downtown Hilo:

Hana Hou

“This store is my stop for kukaa (rolls of dried lauhala ready to strip and weave), hau (inner bark strips for cordage), and kapa (bark cloth). These items are used in ceremony, plaiting, and in hula. There is also a great collection of papale lauhala (hats) that celebrate both the contemporary and traditional styles of weaving.

One might also find umeke (calabash) of kou (native tree more rare than koa) and plant stands of koa. There is also a wonderful selection of etched glassware with our favorite tropical plant designs!”

“Super “iced shaved” (Here in Hilo it is not called “shaved ice”)! Leysan concocts her own flavors (except for the popular strawberry) and builds huge cone mountains of ice! The texture of her treat makes it special. Try the lychee and lilikoi with condensed milk.”
