LAPAKAHI STATE HISTORICAL PARK

NORTH KOHALA, HAWAII'S BIG ISLAND

Located roughly 12 miles north of Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site on Akoni Pule Highway (Highway 270), Lapakahi State Historical Park is a partially restored fishing settlement that dates back over 600 years. This rugged coastal park will give you a glimpse of what it was like to live like the native Hawaiians of the past.

Take a self-guided tour of this 262-acre park and see restored hale (houses) and lava stone walls, then play traditional Hawaiian games and learn more about life in ancient Hawaii. The park’s rocky shoreline also faces the Lapakahi Marine Life Conservation District although swimming is not encouraged. Because the Kohala Coast can get hot, the best time of day to visit is in the morning or later in the afternoon.
