Koolau Golf Club
Koolau Golf Club's compelling layout jumps over forced carries and weaves itself in, around, and through a dense rain forest. It also sits some 2,000 feet below the Koolau's 30-mile long, majestic mountain range, stretching from southeast Oahu to the North Shore.
With a commanding view of Kaneohe Bay, this Oahu golf course features fairways bordered not by rough, but by ball-gobbling jungle. And while the original owners intended Koolau to be one of the most challenging courses in the world, within the past few years it has been made more user-friendly. However, Koolau still packs a powerful wallop for those who play tees beyond their capabilities. No. 18 is the toughest par-4 of all Hawaii golf courses hands down.
The opening hole—a downhill par-5 with an undulating fairway that dogs left, then drops to a waiting green—sets the tone for the day. Sixteen other remarkable holes span the distance between the opener and the closer. Designers Dick Nugent and Jack Tuthill did create a tough layout, but one that will remain front and center in your golf course memory.
