Stop for a bite to eat at any of Oahu’s trendy eateries and you’re sure to see a note on their menu about locally grown products. Restaurants from high-end bistros to cool hole-in-the wall “dives” proudly tout farm to table ingredients. Look for tasty fixings like Mao Farm’s sassy salad mix, Kahuku sweet corn, specialty cheeses from Naked Cow Dairies and fresh fish direct from the Honolulu Fish Auction.
The contemporary idea of “eating Hawaii” is actually grounded in our Native Hawaiian roots and you can experience it yourself. Restaurants as diverse as Chef Mavro, The Whole Ox Deli and Morimoto Waikiki are tantalizing taste buds while supporting local agriculture. Chef Alan Wong, recognized as among “America's Top 10" by Gourmet Magazine, aspires to give guests a true slice of Hawaii by serving things harvested from the land.
Oahu farmers’ markets are also popping up in neighborhoods like Honolulu, Manoa and Haleiwa. The KCC Farmer’s Market, held every Saturday morning near the entrance of Diamond Head State Monument, is one of the biggest. Or head to Oahu’s Windward side to the Kailua Town farmers’ market on Thursday nights for extraordinary eats including locally caught ahi (yellowfin tuna) dinners, rare tropical fruit jellies, guava wood smoked locally raised pork and a North Shore-grown tomato bar.
You can also follow the farm to table process by strolling through Oahu’s plantations, farms and gardens. Or drive to Oahu’s North Shore and sample the fresh fruit at Kahuku Farms or savor Waialua Estate’s award-winning chocolate.
