June 2006
Quickview

From the Director

Aloha HVCB Ohana,

The 2006 HVCB Membership Benefits Survey administered in April 2006 collected results from more than 465 respondents. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate and improve the quality of current HVCB membership benefits. A special mahalo to all of our members that took the time to complete this annual survey.

Communication was found to be essential and of high value to the HVCB Membership base. The three general membership benefits judged most “valuable” by respondents were:

Kahe Wale Monthly E-newsletter – 89%
Bi-Weekly Tourism Industry Update – 88%
Communicating with our Public Relations Division – 77%

Regarding the Kahe Wale newsletter, nearly a fifth of respondents indicated that they use the recently introduced “Quickview” version. We’re happy to know that new features or functionality that we introduce are being well received by the members.

Members also evaluated the value of being listed in the Bureau’s various consumer and travel trade publications. Nearly 77% agreed that publication listings are valuable. The highest ranked publication is the Islands of Aloha, The Official Vacation Planner (80%), which targets leisure travelers.

When asked to comment about the importance of being listed on the Bureau’s websites, nearly 89% of the members indicated that a website link and listing on HVCB Central’s (90%) and the Island Chapter’s (87%) websites are highly valuable as HVCB membership benefits.

In terms of convention level benefits, nearly three-quarters of the respondents surveyed feel that these benefits are of high importance and stated that having their company listed in the annual Meeting Planner’s Guide is valuable to their company – a 25% increase from last year’s
survey.

Members also commented on the Membership Website – www.hvcb.org/membership – as an informational tool. Last year, only a third of respondents had viewed the site within the last six months; this year the number was almost 70%. In addition to updating their contact and marketing content information, reasons for visiting the site included getting information about HVCB events; gathering information on new programs and/or services; and to find out “What’s new with Membership.”

Nearly half of respondents find value in the added-value services offered to members. Of particular interest are additional category listings on GoHawaii.com (55%) and advertising opportunities in our Islands of Aloha Express or Expressly for Travel Professionals newsletters (45%). For more information on how you can take advantage of these enhancements to your membership, please visit http://www.hvcb.org/membership/enhance.htm or call the Membership department at (808) 923-1811.

Again, a special mahalo to all of our members that participated in the annual Membership Benefits Survey. Your time and comments are truly appreciated.

Aloha me pumehana,

Gina Salvador
Director, Membership

TIA Forecasts Summer Leisure Travel To Be Flat This Year

The Travel Industry Association of America (TIA) released its Summer 2006 Forecast report, projecting that Americans will take 325.6 million leisure trips of 50 or more miles away from home during the months of June, July and August 2006, up less than one percent over last summer. TIA notes that consumers continue to be concerned about rising gas costs, hotel room rates and airline fares. Gas prices, in particular, are causing consumers to reconsider their vacation plans. Gasoline prices of $3.00 per gallon could be the “tipping point”— the point at which 10 percent of travelers say they would seriously consider canceling a trip. Between $3.00 and $3.24 per gallon, an additional 26 percent would seriously consider canceling a trip.

Other Highlights of the study:

• The number of nights away from home is expected to decline to 6.0 nights on travelers’ longest

summer trip (compared to 7.0 nights last summer).

• Travelers plan to spend an average of $1,033 on their longest pleasure trip this summer,

essentially unchanged from last summer ($1,019).

• Forty percent (40%) of travelers plan to take children or grandchildren on their longest trip this

  summer.

• Top activities this summer include: visiting friends and relatives (55%), going to a beach or lake

(38%), visiting small towns or rural areas (27%), visiting cities/urban areas (21%), visiting

national or state parks (20%) and visiting historic sites (20%).

• International travel to the U.S. will continue to rise as the value of the U.S. dollar continues to

decline, making it more affordable for international travelers to come to the U.S., and as airlines

more vigorously pursue international markets and add capacity.

Family travelers to Hawaii comprise more than 21.9% of the US market (DBEDT, 2004 Visitor Satisfaction & Activity Report). To help these travelers learn more about family friendly businesses in Hawaii, the “Family Fun” section of our consumer website, www.gohawaii.com, features a link for them to “Find Family Offers.”

Sample offeres may inlcude “kids eat for free” programs, family accommodation

packages, and reduced admissions for children. Consumers may search by island and/or by categories, which include:

• Accommodations
• Activities
• Transportation
• Shopping
• Dining
• Child Care
• Travel Professionals

After looking through the offers, consumers may select which ones they would like to add to their “offer list.” They then complete a brief information form and an email will be sent to the businesses/offers they selected. Each enrolled business in the Family Lead Generation Service (LGS) will have:

• (2) photos
• Company description
