Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a now-fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, that performance changed forever the perception of American dance. The Ailey company has gone on to perform for an estimated 25 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents – as well as millions more through television broadcasts, film screenings, and online platforms.Founded in 1974 as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, Ailey II embodies his pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programs for all people. Ailey II presents some of the country’s best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s most outstanding emerging choreographers.
