Known as the gateway to the North Shore, Haleiwa is a premier right-handed wave that breaks over a finger of shallow reef and has a notoriously strong current. Surfers are continually challenged at this break, and last year the Final came down to an international mix of surfers; Australia's Wade Carmichael (1st place), Brazil's Filipe Toledo (2nd), Oahu's Ezekiel Lau (3rd) and Maui's Dusty Payne (4th). This year, keep a watch for outstanding dark horse performances not to mention top notch surfing from the world's best. This event is always a mix of age, nationality and talent and keeps athletes as well as spectators on their toes. A very amenable venue for beach goers, Haleiwa Alii Beach Park offers public restrooms and showers, shade and plenty of parking.
