The Koloa Plantation Days Celebration began as a one day event in 1985 commemorating the establishment of Hawaii's first sugar mill in the town of Koloa in 1835. The Celebration now spans a nine day period including over 18 family-oriented events showcasing the area's diverse cultural and historical significance. Our goal is to increase the awareness of Koloa's rich and diverse heritage through our numerous and varied events which are cultural, educational and recreational in nature. SATURDAY - July 19
Doubles Tennis Tournament at Kiahuna Swim & Tennis Club, Poipu, 8am-12pm. Doubles 3.5 and above, $10 per person, Round Robin format. Entry includes tee shirt, drinks and snacks. Entries due at Pro Shop by July 18. (742-9533)
Historic Hapa Road Walk at St. Raphael’s Church, Koloa, 10 AM. Easy guided walk along old route between Koloa and Poipu. Light snacks after walk; t-shirts available for purchase. Hosted by Koloa Community Association, 742-2845
Sunset Ho’olaulea at Sheraton Kauai Resort, Poipu, 4 to 9 PM. Great “block party” with entertainment by hula halau, contemporary Hawaiian musicians, and more bands on 3 stages. Food booths, beverages, kids’ activities and rides in oceanfront setting in front of resort. (742-1661).
SUNDAY – July 20
Miniature Golf Tournament – For ages 13 yrs and under at Lawai Beach Resort, 10 AM. Register at 9:30; 75 maximum. Free round on mini-golf course; refreshments and goodie bags. (240-5179).
Kiahuna Aloha Golf Tournament at Kiahuna Golf Course (742-9595). Shotgun start 12 noon. Entry fee $40; register early at pro shop. Relaxed, no-handicap 18-hole golf tournament for juniors and adults. Part of entry fee benefits Junior Golf program.
MONDAY - July 21
Makawehi Sand Dune Walk at Grand Hyatt Kaua’i, Seaview Terrace, 9 AM. From the Seaview Terrace, the guide from Kauai Historical Society leads 2-hour round trip walk through the resort’s grounds to Keoneloa beach and sandstone bluffs, pointing out ancient Hawaiian structures, unusual native plants and animals, and unique geological and social histories of the area. Wear walking shoes and sun protection; bring drinking water. (240-6369)

Maha’ulepu Coastal Hike past Poipu, sponsored by Malama Maha’ulepu, 9 to 11:30 AM. Moderate hike along beach trail and surrounding bluffs overlooking spectacular Maha’ulepu area. Wear sturdy shoes, hats, sunblock, and bring drinking water. (828-1438 for info, reservations). Meet near CJM Stables parking area.
Traditional Hawaiian Games at Kiahuna Plantation Outrigger, 10 AM to 1 PM. Children have fun with disk throwing, spear throwing, “chicken fight,” coconut toss, and 50-yard dash. Goodie bags, refreshments. (742-6411).

Plantation Days Putting Contest at Poipu Bay Resort Golf Club, 2 to 4 PM. Fun for keiki and adults, putting on practice greens at Poipu Bay, adjacent to the Grand Hyatt Kauai. (742-8711).
Luau Buffet Dinner & Show at Grand Hyatt Kaua’i 6 PM. Receive a discount by booking directly with the Grand Hyatt Kaua`i Resort, (808) 240-6456. Doors open at 5:30. Buffet with kalua pork, beef, fish, salads, desserts. Exciting Hawaiian and Polynesian show in gorgeous outdoor setting.
FRIDAY - July 25
Watercolor Painting Workshop at Maha`ulepu, 9:30 AM to Noon. Local artists points out strategic viewpoints of this beautiful rugged coastline beyond Poipu. Ages 15 and up. Old Koloa Town Historical Walk from Koloa School, 5:30 PM. Gail Little will “talk story” about Koloa and the industries and businesses that thrived there, including the first sugar plantation in Hawaii and the whaling ships that provisioned in Koloa. During this easy walk, guide gives interesting history of churches and other historic buildings in town. (332-5201).
SATURDAY - July 26
“CAMP LIFE PLANTATION-STYLE” HISTORIC PARADE – 10 AM in Old Koloa Town.
Horseback and walking units, floral floats, vintage cars, decorated vehicles, and marching band are in a great hometown parade that celebrates aspects of the workers’ camps in plantation towns. Each camp had its ethnic identity, customs, foods, games and sports, music and dance.
KOLOA TOWN CELEBRATION at Anne Knudsen (Koloa) Park
Food, Crafts, Live Entertainment, Fun Zone. $2.00 Admission, 10 AM to 5:30 PM.
Featuring Hawaiian musicians Cecilio & Kapono, slack key guitar virtuoso Ledward Kaapana, Kalaeloa, hula halau, comedian/musician Gregg Hammer, and more.
12 food booths, 70 craft vendors offering variety of products made in Hawaii, rides, waterslides & activities for children, silent auction of activities, merchandise, golf, dining.
American West Barrel Racing Competition at CJM Stables, Poipu 6 PM. Ladies compete for rodeo rankings for state and national competitions in exciting barrel races. (742-6096).
SUNDAY – July 27
Plantation Days Rodeo at CJM Stables Noon to 3:30 PM. 8th annual rodeo featuring double mugging, barrel racing, team roping, steer riding, barrel racing, poo wai u, and other events. Rodeo is a big sport in Hawaii, so entrants are highly competitive and exciting to watch. $1 admission. Food and crafts booths. Bring hats and sunblock. A great family event. Drive 1 mile past Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort in Poipu and follow signs to CJM Stables. (742-6096). |
