Description:
The Friends of Iolani Palace and the Royal Guard of the Hawaii Air National Guard will commemorate King Kalākaua’s birthday on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at Iolani Palace. The Palace will be decorated with red, white and blue bunting and numerous Hawaiian flags reminiscent of Palace decorations used during King Kalākaua’s Birthday Jubilee in 1886. The public is invited to enjoy a free concert of Monarchy era music performed by the Royal Hawaiian Band; a review of the Royal Guard at the front of the steps of the Palace; and the posting of the Royal Guard at the four main Palace gateways.
The Royal Guard was disbanded after the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani on January 17, 1893. On November 16, 1963, it was reactivated by Colonel Walter Judd. The present Royal Guard is composed of guardsmen, who are of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry, serving in the Hawaii Air National Guard. The commands are given in the Hawaiian language.
King Kalakaua built Iolani Palace 126 years ago to enhance the prestige of Hawaii overseas and to mark Hawaii’s status as a modern nation. Iolani Palace is the only official residence of royalty in the United States. For more information, please call Iolani Palace at 522-0822 or visit the website at www.iolanipalace.org
