The highlight of the day will be a formal program and concert at Hawaii Theatre, beginning at 5:00 p.m., followed by an inauguration-themed First Friday block party that is open to the public, beginning at 7:00 p.m., on Pauahi Street and surrounding Chinatown. The event will celebrate the centennial of the election of Honolulu’s first mayor, Joseph Fern. (In 2005-2006, the City celebrated the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the county.)
The inaugural program at Hawaii Theatre will include remarks by Mayor Hannemann, performances by Danny Kaleikini, the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus, and a concert by Cecilio and Kapono. The First Friday activities will feature performances by headliners Fiji and Friends, Augie T, Soulz, the Iolani School halau—the mayor’s alma mater, and Fern School students, who will be representing the school named after Honolulu’s first mayor and the elementary school Mayor Hannemann attended during his third through sixth grades.
