The Shikanodai Azalea Chorus and Women’s Chorus Amore of Nara Prefecture, Japan will join the Honolulu Chorale in “Sounds of the Pacific”, a special presentation at the Community Church of Honolulu, 2345 Nu’uanu Avenue, during their tour of Hawai’i in late June. The Silangan Singers, a Filipino group from Leeward O’ahu, will also participate in the concert on Tuesday, June 30, at 7:00 pm. Admission is free.
The 30-member women’s touring group is drawn from two leading choruses in Nara Prefecture, Western Japan, and is led by Ms. Mika Saiga, an opera singer and lecturer for the NHK Cultural Center. The Shikanodai Azalea Chorus will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2010 and has won several awards in Japan, including the All Japan Chorale Contest as the representative of Nara Prefecture. The Women’s Chorus Amore recently celebrated its 15th anniversary in Osaka, Japan, and performs in sign language while singing. Both groups specialize in Japanese song repertory and will also join the Honolulu Chorale and Silangan Singers in some western favorites, including the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.
The Silangan Singers were founded by Ruth Imperial Pfeiffer to share and perpetuate Philippine history, art and culture in Hawai’i through the performance of choral music from the different regions and in the various languages and dialects of the Philippines.
Founded in 1966, The Honolulu Chorale is one of the oldest community choruses in the State of Hawai’i. Its members represent the multi-ethnicity of the state’s population and sing in a wide variety of musical styles, from classical to folk, Broadway and Hawaiian music under the leadership of Joseph McAlister. In March, the Chorale sponsors an annual Community Chorus Festival at which a number of the State’s ethnic choral groups perform. |
