KA ULU O LAKA HEIAU
HANALEI, KAUAI
Located where the road ends at the impassable cliffs of the Napali Coast, Ka Ulu O Laka Heiau is an ancient temple dedicated to Laka, goddess of the hula. You’ll find the lava rock remnants of this temple and an altar often draped with lei and ti leaves in the wilderness above the pounding surf. Respectfully see where dancers still come to test themselves above the roar of the waves.
It was at this sacred place where a great love story in Hawaiian legend unfolded. It was here that Lohiau, a handsome, mortal Kauai chief, danced before Pele, the fire goddess and they both fell passionately in love.
