Opened in 1927, the Academy is Hawaii's visual arts center, where people can interact with more than 50,000 works spanning 4,000 years—from ancient Egypt to contemporary U.S. You'll find masterpieces by Monet and Gauguin, Rauschenberg and Masami Teraoka. The museum is a leader in the area of modern Japanese painting, and has a lauded collection of ukiyo-e (donated by novelist James Michener). There are stunning galleries of Korean, Indian, Southeast Asian, Filipino and Pacific Island art. The Hawaiian collection chronicles the history of art in Hawaii. Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4:30pm; Sunday 1-5pm. $10 general admission; $5 students, military and seniors; children 12 and under free. FREE DAYS: First Wednesday and third Sunday of every month. First Sunday of every month is free for military personnel and their families. Special features: The Pavilion Cafe, The Academy Shop, Robert Allerton Art Research Library, Museum Learning Center.
