MAKAWAO RODEO, MAUI
Makawao is home to the Hawaiian cowboy, or paniolo. Since the late 19th century, horseback-riding paniolo have been wrangling cattle in Maui’s wide-open upland fields.
Makawao has changed since then, but you can still see the paniolo in action at weekend rodeo shows, where they put their cowhand skills to the test with exciting roping events. Don’t miss the Makawao Rodeo, held each year on the Fourth of July. This is Hawaii's largest paniolo competition and the weekend events include a big parade, country-western dancing, and other festivities.
