PLACES TO VISIT IN UPCOUNTRY MAUI & LAHAINA

Upcountry Maui and Lahaina may reside on the same island, but they feel worlds apart. Upcountry is located on the cool, scenic slopes of Haleakala, Maui’s highest peak, while Lahaina sits on the island’s sunny northwestern shores. Only about an hour apart, these contrasting settings offer a variety of unique attractions.

LAHAINA

Lahaina Historic Trail

Lahaina’s exciting restaurants, art galleries, and seaside attractions often overshadow the town’s incredible historic significance. Once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii and a vital whaling port, Lahaina’s rich past is brought to life on the Lahaina Historic Trail—a self-guided walking tour of more than sixty important sites.

Look for the Lahaina Historic Trail signs at stops like the Banyan Tree, Hale Paahao (the “stuck-in-irons-house” prison), and the Lahaina Jodo Mission.  Visit the Lahaina Visitor Center in the Old Lahaina Courthouse for more information and a map of the Lahaina Historic Trail.

Front Street

Front Street is Lahaina’s lively main thoroughfare. Amongst the seaside shops, art galleries, and restaurants you’ll find many stops on Lahaina’s Historic Walking Trail including the Baldwin House, the Wo Hing Temple, and the Seamens’ House & Hospital.
