The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course

Double Lines

Description

Built just outside Maui's main hub of Kahului and atop rolling sand dunes in Maui's Central Valley, The Dunes at Maui Lani is the closest you can come to playing a Scottish links course in Hawaii.

When architect Robin Nelson first surveyed the land, he realised he was facing the design opportunity of building the course using Maui's unique existing topography. Nelson likens the course to Ballybunion, Wild Dunes, and Shinnecock Hills. Accordingly, bunkers abound, and the prevailing trade winds will bring them into play sooner or later. Five holes feature pot bunkers, two of them at No. 18. This beefy par-5 closing hole punctuates this Maui golf course perfectly. The prevailing wind blows left to right, with water to the right on both the second shot and the approach. Two fairway pot bunkers loom short of the green and must be avoided for any chance at par.

Before leaving home, download the 'Caddie Journal' from The Dunes' informative website. It's free, although the experience of playing The Dunes is invaluable.
