Oahu Special Needs Travel Tips
From accessing airports, seeing the sights, visiting the beach, or renting a car, Oahu has options available for travellers with special needs. Oahu comes under the jurisdiction of the Americans with Disabilities Act so stairs should have a corresponding ramp and escalators a corresponding elevator. Many of the hotels are equipped with wheelchair-accessible rooms, and tour companies provide many special services for travellers with limited mobility. The following listings are not an endorsement for any particular company, business or product.
Every airline provides assistance to passengers with special needs through their skycap (porter) service. Please advise your airline in advance to arrange for any special services to ensure assistance.
Travelling with your Wheelchair
Most airlines transport personal wheelchairs including folding, collapsible or non-folding manual wheelchairs, and electric/battery powered wheelchairs and electric powered carts. Typically, 48 hours advance notice and one hour for check-in on day of departure is needed for any electric/battery-powered chairs.
The Bus and Trolley
Oahu Transit Services (OTS) operates an island-wide fixed route bus (TheBus) service on a daily basis. TheBus uses wheelchair accessible buses on most routes. Contact OTS for route and schedule information for wheelchair accessible buses in advance because not all buses on all routes are lift-equipped. TheBus (OTS): 808-848-5555 (routes, schedules and wheelchair lift information)
With advance notice, car rental companies will provide accessible transport from the airport, from the airport car rental booth to vehicle pickup point, or will deliver the vehicle to the airport terminal. You can also rent vans equipped with wheelchair lifts. Visit these sites for more information:
Wheelers Van Rentals of Hawaii
The State of Hawaii recognizes valid disability parking placards issued by other states and countries for parking in designated, accessible parking spaces. Parking placards must hang from the vehicle’s rearview mirror when the vehicle is parked in a designated space.
