THE HAWAII STATE ART MUSEUM, OAHU
Look across the street from the State Capitol and Iolani Palace and you'll find the Islands' newest museum, the Hawaii State Art Museum. Located on the second floor of a historic Spanish-Mission style building, this was once the site of the first hotel in Hawaii, the original Royal Hawaiian Hotel, in 1872.
Opened in 2002, the Hawaii State Art Museum houses an extensive state-owned collection of fine art exclusively created by Hawaii artists. This free museum exhibits a fine collection of local art in a variety of mediums: painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, and mixed-media. If you're downtown visiting Iolani Palace, cross the street and see the Islands of Aloha through the eyes of Hawaii's artists.
