Wailua Golf Course

Kauai

Double Lines

Description

Wailua Golf Course is a beautiful seaside layout and Kauai's sole municipal golf course. It is recognized as one of the best municipal golf courses in Hawaii, as well as one of America's best public courses. The U.S. Golf Association has held three National Amateur Public Links championships at Wailua (1975, 1985, 1996).

The front nine's first three holes run along the Pacific and a picturesque beach before working itself back through a tapestry dotted with coconut palms. The back nine includes Wailua's original six holes, which date back to 1920. The course closes with a flourish from the 14th through 18th holes, with two ocean par-3s at No. 14 and 17.

The late Toyo Shirai -- a member of the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame -- is responsible for the redesign of Wailua into 18 holes in 1962, routing an entirely new back nine and redesigning the front side.

Wailua is located along Kauai's venerable east-facing Coconut Coast, north of the airport along Highway 56 and just a few miles from Lihue. Thanks to a $2 million irrigation system installed in 2002, Wailua now sustains its lush looking appearance year-round. Wailua is very popular among the island's residents and it is best to avoid play on weekends and holidays.
