Description

Hawaii Byodo-In Temple located within Valley of the Temples Memorial Park celebrates its fifth annual Obon Festival on Saturday, Aug. 5 from 5:00 to 7:45 p.m. Similar to America’s Thanksgiving, Obon marks a time when families reunite to celebrate their heritage with loved ones and ancestors who’ve passed away. Held since the 7th century, Obon is a tradition that preserves Japanese heritage and passes the country’s culture to younger generations. At the beginning of Obon, spirits are called to the cemetery through the burning of incense and the offering of a prayer. At the end, spirits are led to a river or the ocean's edge on their way back to the world of the dead, guided by a paper lantern with a candle inside. Although some of Obon’s rituals are somber, much of the holiday is festive. It’s a time when families reunite and celebrate the Bon Festival and Lantern Floating Ceremony for all loved ones and ancestors who have passed.
