Kamran Samimi grew up in rural Laupahoehoe on Hawaii Island, and received a BFA in printmaking in 2010 and an MFA in sculpture and print media in 2016 from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He is currently an artist in residence at the Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, & Design. Samimi finds inspiration from a range of sources and cultures, choosing to see materials as spiritual mediums that may be channeled to create art. His work is based upon the natural world, inspired by its physical expressions and capacity for insight on concepts of space, time, and impermanence. Samimi’s work in In Stillness explore how in-between spaces are full of meaning, expanses of hidden possibility, and moments to see connections between things. By coaxing materiality from the unseen, the artist performs an act of spiritual practice. In Stillness is a collaboration with Shangri La, Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design.
