Boating on Lānaʻi
Some Lānaʻi residents discourage visitors from partaking in snorkel and dive boat tours visiting from Maui, as these areas are wahi pana (storied and sacred places) utilized for subsistence fishing and gathering. As an alternative, Lānaʻi residents invite visitors to visit for the day (or more!) to visit the historic, charming town of Lānaʻi City and explore the island responsibly through the community-supported Lānaʻi Guide app.
Four Seasons guests can book a sail through Lana'i Ocean Sports. During the winter, whale-watching tours leave from Mānele Harbor and give you an awe-inspiring glimpse of majestic koholā (humpback whales) right off Lānaʻi’s coast.
Visitors can also take trips to and from Mānele Harbor and Lāhainā Harbor in Maui through the Expeditions Ferry service. There are multiple round-trips daily, and the trip takes about an hour. Depending on what time of year you're visiting, ferry rides are another great way to spot humpbacks in the Auʻau Channel, one of the whales' most-traveled ocean thoroughfares.
