Waikele Golf Club resides in a planned residential development just west of Honolulu and above the far reaches of Pearl Harbor on the gently sloping topography of Waipio. It has a sporty Ted Robinson design with just enough of the architect's signature water features to satiate any golfer.
The fourth hole, a very short par-4, just 300 yards from the tips, plays downwind for those bold enough to try to reach the putting surface from the tee. With its elevated green protected by a pond, a deft lay-up off the tee sets up a short-iron approach to a two-tiered green, a very common feature at Waikele.
The par-3 17 is another favorite. Hitting from an elevated tee to a deep, narrow green fronted by water and a small, but strategically situated sand bunker, golfers need to judge wind direction before selecting a club. Adept golfers will tend to play a controlled knock-down.
Critical to scoring well at Waikele is keeping the ball in play off the tee although big hitters find it hard to resist taking aim at most every hole. This Oahu golf course, which opened in 1993, underwent a total reconditioning of its greens in 2006 making its layout less of a risk and more of a reward.
