Huakaʻi at Waikōloa Dry Forest
Visit the Waikoloa Forest Preserve where you can learn about Waikōloa and the unique lowland dry forest on a Huakaʻi. On these intentional, guided hikes across the lava, you’ll see ancient wiliwili trees, sweeping views of Kohala, and kīpuka that are full of thriving native plants thanks to the restoration efforts of the Waikōloa community. These sunset forest tours are offered on the first Friday of each month. These tours begin at at the preserveʻs front gate and conclude with sunset viewing and refreshments at Hana Hou Hale, an open-air pavilion. These are not strenuous hikes, but tours will include walking over uneven terrain in exposed areas. Participants should arrive prepared by wearing sturdy close-toed shoes, wearing sun protection, and bringing a refillable water bottle.
