Where is the main airport on Molokaʻi?
The main airport is Molokaʻi Airport (MKK). There is no direct service to Molokaʻi from the continental U.S. Instead, fly to Oʻahu’s Honolulu International Airport (HNL), where you can connect to local airlines with service to Molokaʻi Airport.

How far is it from Molokaʻi Airport (MKK) to:
  • Hālawa Valley: 2 hours
  • Kaunakakai: 15 minutes
  • Maunaloa: 40 minutes
 
Do I need a car to get around Molokaʻi?
There is no public transportation on Molokaʻi, so it’s best to rent a car. Quantities are limited, so make reservations in advance. Taxi services are limited. 

Where are the major accommodation areas on Molokaʻi?
Accommodations on Molokaʻi vary from the oceanfront Hotel Molokaʻi to rental condos, cottages, and bed-and-breakfasts in Kaunakakai and Maunaloa.

When is a good time to visit Molokaʻi?
The weather in Molokaʻi is pleasant year-round. The Hawaiian games of the Ka Molokaʻi Makahiki Festival are held in January and the Molokaʻi Ka Hula Piko in June is a popular event celebrating the birth of the hula. Whale-watching season begins in December and ends in May. Peak whale-watching months are between January and early April.

What is the time difference from the continental U.S.?
Hawaiʻi follows Hawaiʻi Standard Time (GMT-10 hours), which is five hours behind Eastern Standard Time and two hours behind Pacific Standard Time. Hawaiʻi does not observe Daylight Saving Time, so add one extra hour to the time difference during this period (March through November).

Do I need my passport to get to Molokaʻi?
Since Hawaiʻi is the 50th state, you won’t need to bring your passport unless you’re visiting from outside the United States or traveling to another country after Hawaiʻi.

What should I pack on my trip to Molokaʻi?
Year-round temperatures average around 75˚F (23.9˚C), so bring your casual clothes. At Molokaʻi’s higher elevations it can get a bit cooler and wetter, so pack a light jacket or sweater for the evenings. If you plan on taking a mule or horseback ride, pack a pair of jeans and sturdy shoes.

While travelers checks aren’t necessary, it is recommended that you carry some cash while visiting Molokaʻi since not every storefront takes credit and/or debit cards, and ATMs may not be readily available.

Is there cell phone and internet access on Molokaʻi?
There are cell phone towers on Molokaʻi with limited service. Expect to make some outgoing calls via landline at your hotel or rental. The area code for all of Hawaiʻi is (808). Internet access is not readily available on Molokaʻi, but you can check with your hotel or rental to see if they offer internet access.

  • Pāpōhaku Beach: At three miles long, this is one of the largest white-sand beaches in Hawaiʻi.
