Carlsmith Beach Park (Four Mile)

Where: South Hilo, Island of Hawaiʻi
Activities: Swimming, snorkeling
Amenities: Parking, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, lifeguard (weekends and holidays)

While it may not have a sandy shoreline, Carlsmith still offers plenty for a great day at the beach. Its well-kept lawn is perfect for lying on a towel in the sun or having a picnic. Enjoy swimming and snorkeling in its calm waters. The area consists of several large lagoons where you can often spot honu (sea turtles). It’s also one of the better beaches for recreation in the Hilo area. Much of this side of the island is made up of lava rocks but the ocean bottom at Carlsmith Beach Park is relatively smooth and sandy.

Please note: Hawaiʻi's ocean and beach conditions are as unique as the islands themselves. Visit HIOCEANSAFETY.COM which constantly monitors the surf, wind, and reports from public safety officials that directly affect the conditions for safety of Hawaiian beaches. Use the hazard signs on HIOCEANSAFETY.COM as well to quickly assess conditions and help you find the appropriate beach for your visit.
