Paniolo Preservation Society 25th Anniversary Celebration & Ka Mea Kanu ʻAi: Paniolo BBQ & Slack Key Celebration

The Paniolo Preservation Society 25th Anniversary & Nā Mea Kanu ʻAi – Paniolo BBQ & Slack Key Celebration invites visitors to experience Hawaiʻi’s living ranching culture in Waimea. Held on September 3, 2026, at the historic Pukalani Stables, this milestone gathering honors 25 years of preserving the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) way of life.

Founded in 1998, the Paniolo Preservation Society is dedicated to protecting and sharing the heritage of Hawaiʻi’s paniolo—whose traditions trace back to the early 19th century and the influence of Mexican vaqueros who trained Native Hawaiians in horsemanship and ranching. Today, the organization preserves artifacts, oral histories, and living practices that continue to shape Hawaiʻi’s cultural identity and rural economy.

The celebration brings this legacy to life through an immersive experience of music, food, and storytelling. Guests will enjoy locally raised beef prepared over open fires, fresh island-grown produce, and flavors rooted in the land and sea. Live kī hōʻalu (slack key guitar) and Hawaiian music fill the stables, while multi-generational ranch families share stories beneath the backdrop of Mauna Kea.

More than a festival, the event reflects a core paniolo value—community sustained through land, work, and music. It is an opportunity to connect with a culture that is not staged, but lived.

The evening also introduces Mālama Kō Aloha, a Hawaiʻi-based television series in development that draws inspiration from paniolo life and the deep ties between families, land, and legacy. The project includes mentorship programs that train local youth in music, film, and cultural arts, continuing the tradition of learning through practice and generational knowledge-sharing.

For visitors, this is a rare opportunity to experience Hawaiʻi beyond the expected—where the music is still shared among ʻohana, the food comes from nearby pastures, and the stories continue to unfold.
