What Visitors Need to Know

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Hawaiʻi Island, and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Maui, Oʻahu, and Kauaʻi Counties, as Tropical Storm Lala approaches. Heavy rain, dangerous surf, and the potential for flooding are expected statewide through the weekend.

Know Before You Go

Getting Here: Several flights to and from Kona (KOA), Hilo (ITO), and Kahului (OGG) have been canceled on Saturday, 15 August; confirm your flight status directly with your airline before heading to the airport. TSA will close the security checkpoint at Kona International Airport (KOA) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Getting Around: The State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation advises residents and visitors to stay off roads this weekend as much as possible.

In the Water: Dangerous surf and storm surge are expected statewide this weekend. Stay out of the ocean, especially along windward and southern shores.

Conditions by Island

Hawaiʻi Island is under a Hurricane Warning, with hurricane-force winds expected Saturday. Follow all instructions from hotel staff and county emergency management, and stay off the roads as much as possible.

  • Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is closed Saturday. Kīlauea Military Camp and Volcano House remain open for registered guests only.
  • ʻImiloa Astronomy Center is closed Saturday and Sunday.


Maui, Lānaʻi, and Molokaʻi are under a Tropical Storm Warning. Expect heavy rain and rough surf beginning this weekend.

  • Haleakalā National Park is closed on Saturday. Sunrise reservations are canceled.


Oʻahu is under a Tropical Storm Warning. Expect heavy rain and rough surf beginning this weekend.

  • Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is closed through 19 August for previously scheduled construction, unrelated to the storm.
  • Overnight camping permits at all City and County of Honolulu parks are suspended starting at 6 p.m. Saturday.


Kauaʻi is under a Tropical Storm Warning. Expect heavy rain and rough surf beginning this weekend.

  • Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park, including Kalalau Trail, Nuʻalolo Kai, and Miloliʻi Beach, closes Saturday. Overnight camping on Kalalau Trail was suspended starting Friday.
  • All state parks are closed Saturday.
  • The Haʻena Shuttle is closed Saturday and Sunday.
  • Polihale State Park is closed until further notice.
