Événements culturels des îles hawaïennes
Chaque année, les festivals de musique sont l’occasion de célébrer la musique hawaïenne, ainsi que la singularité des instruments, des musiciens et des chansons de l’État. Le Ukulele Festival se déroule en juillet dans la salle de concert Kapiolani Park Bandstand, à Waikiki. Contrairement à ce que l’on pense, le ukulélé n’est pas un instrument traditionnel hawaïen ; il a été importé par des immigrés portugais à la fin du XIXe siècle.

Aujourd’hui encore, le ukulélé fait partie intégrante du paysage musical d’Hawaï ; il est présent sur scène, mais aussi à la plage et lors des pique-niques en famille. Le Kona Slack Key Festival, qui a lieu en septembre sur l’île d’Hawaï, célèbre une manière typiquement locale de jouer de la guitare, le « slack key », autre caractéristique musicale incontournable de l’État. Le « slack key » consiste à jouer avec des cordes moins tendues, pour un résultat plus détendu et fluide. Un style qui reflète la décontraction et la douceur de vivre des habitants d’Hawaï.
