Island of Hawaiʻi Stand-Up Paddleboarding
If you like the idea of surfing but don’t love the thought of wiping out, stand-up paddleboarding/SUP may be the perfect activity for you. Whether you’re a first-timer or a pro-paddler, there are many places on the island of Hawaiʻi to try out this super-popular water sport; after all, it was invented right here in the Hawaiian Islands!
On the tranquil western coast, you’ll find SUP rentals and tours everywhere from Kona to Kealakekua Bay, where you can paddle through crystal-clear waters past ancient heiau (sacred temples), rugged lava cliffs and the white obelisk Captain Cook Monument. The calm, protected waters of Kailua Bay, Keauhou Bay, Kahaluʻu Beach and Hilo Bay are more great SUP spots on Hawaiʻi Island.
If you’ve never tried it before, start with a lesson from an experienced instructor. You can even take a guided tour to sea caves, or explore waters teeming with playful spinner dolphins and manta rays.
